CFI / CFI-I FAQs
A shorter set of practical answers about Instructor Training, the CFI-I add-on, costs, timing, and how Pilot Rise approaches teaching practice.
The initial CFI course focuses on teaching airplane students, right-seat proficiency, lesson development, observation, supervised teaching practice, spin training, and practical-test preparation. The CFI-I add-on focuses on teaching instrument students using ground instruction, BATD repetitions, and real-aircraft instrument teaching.
Most candidates complete the initial CFI first, then add CFI-I so the second course can focus on instrument-specific teaching. You can still discuss the sequence, review instrument knowledge, and organize lesson plans while your initial CFI is in progress.
There is no fixed Part 61 course-hour minimum like there is for some earlier certificates. You must receive the required training, obtain the required endorsements, meet eligibility requirements, and demonstrate proficiency to the applicable practical-test standard. Pilot Rise publishes planning hours so you can understand the expected structure.
You practice diagnosing learner errors, adapting explanations, briefing and debriefing clearly, using lesson plans effectively, and changing the lesson when the original plan is not working. When appropriate, CFI candidates may observe real lessons and conduct supervised ground teaching with an experienced instructor protecting the student experience.
The initial CFI estimate assumes 8 hours of dual flight, 3 hours of solo/PIC checkride practice, 25 hours of shared ground instruction, included observations and training-device use, and a $1,000 checkride allowance. The CFI-I estimate assumes 6 hours of dual flight, 3 hours of solo/PIC checkride practice, 15 hours of shared ground instruction, included observations and training-device use, and the same $1,000 checkride allowance. Final cost depends on proficiency, preparation, scheduling, and outside costs.
No. Course completion, certificate issuance, and employment are separate decisions. Pilot Rise may consider its own CFI candidates when positions are available, but hiring depends on current staffing needs, performance, professionalism, teaching ability, safety judgment, and completion of the normal interview process.
