529 Plans

Use Your 529 Plan for Flight Training

Federal law now allows 529 funds to be used for certain career-focused credentialing programs, including eligible FAA pilot certificates and ratings.

Pilot Rise can provide the training documentation your 529 plan administrator may request.

What Changed?

Historically, 529 funds were most commonly used for colleges, universities, and certain approved education programs. That created confusion for aspiring pilots because many families assumed flight training at a local flight school could not qualify.

The 2025 federal law changed that by expanding qualified 529 expenses to include recognized postsecondary credentialing programs. In plain English, this means 529 funds may now be used for certain career-focused training programs that lead to recognized credentials, licenses, or certifications.

For aviation students, that is a major change.

FAA pilot certificates and ratings are not casual hobbies. They are federally recognized aviation credentials used for private flying, instrument flying, commercial flying, flight instructing, and airline career progression.

Why Flight Training May Qualify?

FAA Certificates and Ratings Are Recognized Aviation Credentials.

These include:

  • Private Pilot Certificate
  • Instrument Rating
  • Commercial Pilot Certificate
  • Multi-Engine Rating
  • Certified Flight Instructor
  • Certified Flight Instructor Instrument
  • Multi-Engine Instructor
  • Airline Transport Pilot

These credentials are issued or recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration and require specific training, aeronautical knowledge, flight experience, and testing.

Because the new 529 rules include certain occupational and professional credentials recognized by the federal government, FAA pilot training may now fall under the expanded 529 eligibility rules.

What 529 Funds Can Cover for Flight Training

When used for a qualifying program, 529 funds may help cover expenses required for training, such as:

  • Flight instruction
  • Aircraft rental
  • Ground instruction
  • Required books and training materials
  • Required supplies and equipment
  • FAA written test fees
  • Practical test preparation
  • Checkride-related fees when applicable
  • Other required training expenses tied to the certificate or rating

The key phrase is required for the training program. Optional purchases, non-training expenses, unrelated travel, and non-required equipment may not qualify.

How to Use a 529 Plan at Pilot Rise

Using a 529 plan for flight training usually starts with your plan administrator. Each 529 plan may have its own process for documentation, withdrawals, reimbursements, and direct payments.

Here is the general process:

  1. Contact your 529 plan administrator.
Ask to withdrawal for qualified postsecondary credentialing expenses under the updated 529 rules.

  2. Tell them you are training for an FAA pilot certificate or rating.
Explain that the training is tied to a federally recognized aviation credential.

  3. Request documentation requirements.
Your administrator may ask for invoices, training program details, a cost estimate, or a written explanation of the credential being pursued.

  4. Contact Pilot Rise.
We can provide documentation for your training program, estimated costs, invoices, and receipts.

  5. Keep records.
Save all invoices, receipts, payment records, and communications with your 529 administrator for tax documentation.
